Our Work

The Organization of American States (OAS) is comprised of all 35 independent states of the Americas, and is the main political, juridical and social governmental forum in the hemisphere. WYA is a registered civil society organization with the OAS, and participates at the annual OAS General Assembly meetings and regional summits. WYA’s involvement is critical since the OAS plays an important role in carrying out the mandates established by the hemisphere’s leaders throughout the Americas.

Member opportunities to participate at the OAS: WYA will be present at the Sixth Summit of the Americas on April 14 – 16 in Cartagena, Colombia. The theme of the Summit is “Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity”. Contact the Latin America regional office to find out how you can participate.

Organization of American States General Assembly: WYA monitors the OAS General Assembly, which convenes once a year in regular sessions. The General Assembly sets forth resolutions and declarations, in addition to approving the OAS budget. In the past, WYA has been selected by the Department for International Affairs of the OAS to send members to represent Latin American youth at private consultations with the Secretary General of the OAS.

Summits of the Americas: The Summits of the Americas are a series of international meetings that bring together leaders of countries in North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Leaders discuss common policy issues and commit to actions at both the national and regional level to overcome the Hemisphere’s challenges and achieve greater levels of development.
