Viviamo! Celebrating the Beauty in Living
“By looking to beauty the great theoretical physicists of our age have made major discoveries.” (The New Story of Science by Augros and Stanciu)
The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. The event is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
As part of this celebration, the World Youth Alliance is hosting a contest that will run from October 2005 to October 2006. The theme of the contest is Viviamo! – Italian for ‘We Live’. We are looking for project proposals that give practical ways of improving the state of one’s habitat that is commensurate to the dignity of those who live there. It should capture the beauty we see in ourselves, and around us, and that affirms the cause for celebration: the fact that we are.
The fourth goal and principle of the Habitat Agenda inspires this project. It states:
“The quality of life of all people depends…on physical conditions and spatial characteristics of our villages, towns and cities. City lay out and aesthetics, land-use patterns, population and building densities, transportation and ease of access for all to basic goods, services and public amenities have a crucial bearing on the livability of settlements.”
The project provides WYA members with the opportunity to participate in World Habitat Day in a unique way.
Participants are invited to submit a creative proposal for a project that best helps to improve one’s habitat and that best presents the beauty in living. These projects will be implemented within the designated year in the respective regions and showcased at their Culture of Life events. Winning projects will be posted on the World Youth Alliance website and will be highlighted by the Alliance at the United Nations headquarters in New York on World Habitat Day on 2nd October 2006.
Put on your thinking caps and let’s get to work!
