Ubuchindami - Book Discussion
On 23rd September World Youth Alliance members from Nairobi Kenya discussed the book Man and the State by Jacques Maritain at Mamba Village. Jacques Maritain, philosopher and writer, is one of the preeminent scholars on modern ideas and of the relation between the person and the state. The book examines the place and role of the state, the development of the idea of human rights, the limits of these rights, and the need for the recognition of what they truly represent. The theme of the discussion was: The question Why? an exploration of the foundation of human rights. If you have not read the book, why not read it and discuss ith with your friends.

Action on the ground!
World Youth Alliance Africa marked World Habitat Day on October 2 in a unique way at Mukuru kwa Reuben Slum, Nairobi. The exercise aimed to demonstrate how the ideas of human dignity can be lived in everyday life through simple activities that can change society and by showing how individuals can influence society positively through simple action. Asia Pacific

Greetings from Indonesia!
Yasmine Soraya, a member from Indonesia, shares her insights as a young, Muslim woman who sees the link between the Charter and her faith. She shares how Islam teaches and protects the rights of human beings. "Islam has guides on how to live in the world, responsibilities that we believe are made to protect the rights of children, women, and men. I believe all religions have a similar foundation when it comes to life. The WYA Charter describes the basic principles that we should affirm as human beings, without differentiating religion, ethnicity, and nationality. Most importantly, the WYA develops a spirit within each young person to become better in everything he or she does in life." To read the rest of Yasmine's thoughts, click here

Back in Cebu for the Visayas-Mindanao Joint Regional Conference
Last October 20, 2006 (Friday), WYA AP paid Cebu City, the Queen City of the South, another visit. This time it was to address the delegates of the 1st Association of Law Students of the Philippines Visayas-Mindanao Joint Regional Conference. Appearing before law students from San Sebastian College-Recoletos (Manila), University of Iloilo (Iloilo City), Silliman University (Dumaguete City), Holy Name University (Tagbilaran City), Southwestern University (Cebu City), and University of San Carlos (Cebu City), we certainly looked forward to a serious, if not lawyerly participation from them. Asia Pacific Director Erika Tatad addressed aspiring lawyers from these different law schools wanting and very eager to know more about WYA, what we have done and what we continue do. The vision of WYA was certainly echoed by these law students, as they recognize the role of the youth in society and are cognizant of the rights afforded to them by the law. We are truly hopeful that as these participants go home to their provinces, they will bring with them WYA and will help promote the dignity of the person.
