Population - Commission on Population and Development
The 43rd Commission on Population and Development
WYA staff and interns participated in the 43rd Commission on Population and Development, which took place at UN Headquarters in New York from April 12-16, 2010. WYA's delegation was led by Shannon Joseph, former WYA UN Advocacy Specialist. The theme of the Commission was "health, morbidity, mortality and development." World Youth Alliance took this theme and applied it to the problem of maternal mortality, suggesting that health, morbidity, mortality and development intersect at the right of mothers to receive the healthcare needed to have safe pregnancies and deliveries.

2008 Accomplishments
The 41st Commission on Population and Development took place at UN Headquarters in New York, from April 7 to 11, 2008 and addressed the theme: "Population distribution, Urbanization, Internal Migration and Development."
World Youth Alliance submitted a written statement to the commission emphasizing the need for investment in human capacity development as an answer to current challenges related to the rapid urbanization occurring throughout the world. The statement included the WYA's 2007 Declaration on Population and Development.
Interns Aliah Dimaporo of the Philippines, Marystella Ramirez Guerra of El Salvador, and Katarzyna Petriw of Poland served as WYA's representatives at the commission. Shannon Joseph, Director of WYA-North America, wrote a statement on WYA's behalf that was delivered by Aliah Dimaporo to the assembly of delegates. In it we shared the lessons we have learned through our work with Acortar Distancias in Mexico and Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines emphasizing that human capacity development and investments in cultural capital are critical for successful sustainable development.
