The Commission on the Status of Women presents recommendations and reports to the Economic and Social Council on promoting women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields. It aims to promote implementation of the principle that men and women shall have equal rights. Following the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, CSW was mandated to regularly reviewing areas of concern in the Platform for Action.

The 52nd Commission on the Status of Women
From February 25 to March 7, 2008, World Youth Alliance attended the 52nd Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. Our delegation was composed of WYA members from Australia, Canada, France, Kenya, Korea, the Philippines, Poland and the USA, and we participated in many regional and thematic working groups in which we assisted in drafting statements and language for the agreed conclusions of the commission. It was an exciting challenge!
Our delegation members learned a great deal from the numerous panels and parallel events we attended at the commission. We were also able to form relationships with members of the NGO community from all five WYA regions as well as state representatives from the countries in these regions.
During the commission WYA's ideas were communicated to delegates through our Esperanza newsletter. Team member Kristen Panico also prepared and delivered a speech during the Interactive Panel which was attended by country delegations and representatives of UN institutions and the NGO community - you can read Kristen's speech here.
