About the Emerging Leaders Conference


This conference is the 3rd annual event of World Youth Alliance Europe that brings together young people, members and youth leaders from across Europe to interact with regional leaders and policy makers on current global issues.

Theme
The theme for this year’s conference is International Year of the Family and Youth Unemployment Crisis and will take place in Brussels from November 17 - 21, 2014. The Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) is an annual event hosted by WYA, which seeks to bring together critical thinkers to examine issues in the areas of youth unemployment, the family, work-family balance and intergenerational solidarity.

Schedule
The Emerging Leaders Conference is a week-long gathering that features a wide range of events, including lectures, panel discussions, workshops, trainings, group activities, a cocktail reception and more.

Conference fee
You will be charged a fee of 70 euros, which includes a welcome pack, conference expenses, lunches, a dinner and a cocktail reception. Any other expenses incurred (i.e. travel) will be your own responsibility. To apply and try to grant a place in the ELC, please fill out the online application form here. After receiving a formal acceptance letter, you will have two weeks to pay the conference fee.

We dispose of a number of need-based scholarships for the accommodations, which are available to our members. Once you fill out the ELC 2014 application form, you will have the opportunity to apply for the accommodation assistance provided by WYA Europe.

Application Process

The application process for attending the ELC 2014 will begin on August 10, 2014.

  • You must be a WYA member. If you are not yet a WYA member, please sign the Charter in order to become a member (prerequisite for participating in the ELC).
  • Fill out the online application form here. Send us your application and let us know about your motivations to join the ELC 2014.
  • The application deadline is on October 30, 2014.

* Submitting your application form does not imply in automatic accreditation for the conference. Candidacies will be studied and candidates might be invited to provide further information. Selected participants will be notified and receive a formal acceptation letter at least one month before the starting date of the ELC.

The Essay Competition
 

World Youth Alliance has an amazing opportunity for those who are interested in joining the Emerging Leaders Conference 2014. By promoting an essay contest, World Youth Alliance Europe will provide to the winner a free conference fee to attend the conference in Brussels, Belgium.

WYA believes that giving young people the opportunity to be heard and act proactively is the first step to promote a positive change in the world. WYA members are invited to raise their voice for a chance to join the ELC 2014 without the fee cost!

* Participants of the Essay Competition are also part of the regular application process for the Emerging Leaders Conference. By submitting an essay through the competition application form, candidates will be automatically registered to the ELC 2014 selection process. So there will be two opportunities to acquire your place in the Emerging Leaders Conference 2014. Even if you are not the winner of the essay contest, you still can be selected to attend the ELC through the regular application process, by taking responsibility for your conference fee and other personal expenses.

  • What is the importance of this year's theme?

    In order to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family, World Youth Alliance intends to highlight the fundamental role which families play in the evolution of young people. By recognizing that family is the basic and first unit of the human society, we shall admit that development works totally related with the healthful relationship among the people in the world.

    This year's ELC will inspire young people think critically, to tackle the challenging issues of today, with regards to family and global issues of youth development.
 
  • What topics will be covered in the conference?

    We will be discussing issues related to growth of youth employment and participation in the labor market, in all its multi-faceted dimensions: the philosophical, social, political, economical and global (to name a few). We will be examining issues such as the importance of family in promoting a sustainable environment for the personal and professional development of young people. In addition, we will also consider possible solutions to some of the problems at the policy-making level.

  • What does the participation fee cover?

    The 70 euros fee covers a welcome pack, conference expenses, certification of participation, lunches, a dinner and a cocktail reception. All other expenses are not covered by this fee and the individual participants are responsible for these expenses.
 
  • Can I bring guests?

    Please do! Invite your friends to the conference. Just send them the link and be sure they also have applied online. After the application process, selected participants will receive a formal invitation and the confirmation of attendance in the conference.
 
  • Can I volunteer for the ELC week?

  • Is there financial assistance available?

    The deadline to apply is October 30, 2014. Spots are filling up so be sure to apply online as soon as the application process opens on August 10, 2014!
