Power of Youth at International Institutions: Workshop on how young people speak for human dignity at the UN and EU
Training session in the European Parliament, Brussels 16th Oct ’08
On Thursday, October 16th, WYA Europe held a training session for a group of over 40 young people from Ireland. The event started with a welcome note by Kathy Sinnott MEP and an introduction by Francois Jacob, WYAE Director. Youth could listen to the lecture by Rebecca Austen, WYA Director of Advocacy, on how young people can get involved in the promotion of human dignity at the international institutions, especially the UN and what are the areas of focus for WYA action. She highlighted the main questions regarding human rights philosophy (human dignity as the foundation of human rights, not the opposite) and presented the key facts in history of the UN Population and Development conferences.
After a short break young participants took part in an interactive workshop on the recent EP report and simulated MEP work by: amending the draft paper, working in groups and voting the amended report in the plenary. They could practice drafting the policy language and arguing upon it. Participants were pleased to get an insight into the policy work of the institutions and to see how ideas and values are mirrored in EU documents.
