Cosmopolitanism is the philosophy of the future, and we must believe in it. In the following article, I will explain why cosmopolitanism aligns more with the World Youth Alliance (WYA). For this, I will first define communitarianism, the opposite philosophy. Later, I will define cosmopolitanism. Finally, I will relate this concept to the mission of WYA, but above all to solidarity.

On the one hand, communitarianism is a philosophy that was born from the realistic theory of International Relations. This theory hints that we are not all citizens of the world. This means that the neighbor who lives abroad matters less than the one who lives in my own country. Under this premise, we are moving away from solidarity, and we are also moving away from the benefits of globalization. It is always better to belong to a global network. After all, WYA is a global network, a family of different nationalities. That is why communitarianism is a dangerous concept, since it moves away from respecting the dignity of each person, which is what the WYA advocates.

On the other hand, cosmopolitanism is a philosophy that was born from the liberal theory of International Relations. This theory hints that we are all citizens of the world. This means that the neighbor who lives abroad is just as important as that of my country. Bilbeny already expressed it: “Cosmopolitanism advances as a necessity in spheres that are limited by the national, cosmopolitanism is an alternative that contributes to fight with the problems that threaten humanity” (2007, p.40). This philosophy allows us to find joint solutions to migration, organized violence, drug trafficking and any other situation that threatens our well-being. Next, I will explain why this philosophy is more in line with the mission of WYA.

First, by adopting a cosmopolitan, we are beginning to respect the dignity of each person regardless of their age, gender, or country where they live. That is already a fundamental step. Likewise, remember the WYA statement on Solidarity. This concept is achieved thanks to the “unified commitment of people to live and work in the truth of who we are and for the search for the common good” (WYA). We have to unify and all try to reach the same goal. Therefore, it is important to adopt a cosmopolitan worldview to start working together to achieve the objectives. Here is fundamental  not to progress as a country, but to improve as a society. Finally, to better understand these issues, I consider it crucial to read the remainder of the WYA statement of solidarity here.

In conclusion, cosmopolitanism is the worldview of the future that we must adopt. This concept not only fits the mission of WYA and the solidarity that is promoted in this organization, but it is also a way of understanding and being more empathetic with a neighbor who does not share our same perspective. In addition, international collaboration is very important to solve the great problems of this present society. In short, I invite you to be a cosmopolitan to achieve a better world.

Cosmopolitismo vs Comunitarismo
