Afghanistan has suffered for a long time, but in recent months its situation has worsened. This is due to the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the taking of hostages by terrorist groups. For this reason, Afghans have been forced to leave their country searching for a more prosperous future. Obviously, the countries with the most Afghans are those with whom this country share borders, such as Pakistan and Iran. According to the BBC (2021), “half a million Afghans could flee the country before the end of the year.” In this context, countries with an extraordinary spirit of solidarity have emerged, such as Ecuador.

Ecuador, which is 14 978 kilometers from Afghanistan, will receive 5000 Afghans according to the Minister of Government Alejandra Vela (Forbes, 2021). This shows that solidarity is not only about sharing borders, but also about helping others because they are human beings. Ecuador has complied with the World Youth Alliance’s Declaration on Migration and Development which states, “Conditions must be fostered that meet the needs of those who have left their homes due to force and violence with approaches that protect the dignity of all migrants.” It is important to state that, Ecuador has suffered from the pandemic. According to Ecovis (2021), between March and December 2020 alone, Ecuador had already registered losses of US$16,382 million. Despite this, the trans-andean country has shown unparalleled cosmopolitanism in accepting Afghans. We must learn that we are all citizens of the world, and that in order to survive we can all help each other.

Solidarity can and should be shown at all times, but especially in the most difficult times. It does not matter race, sex, or nationality, and Ecuador has demonstrated that with this action that helps to solve the complicated situation of the Afghans. There are many lessons in this decision that has been taken. One of them can be related to one of the texts that I was able to read in chapter 4 of the WYA Certified Training Program. In this chapter: Dalai Lama, through the article Our Global Family, states that: “We are the same human beings. That is what unites us with each other. It is what makes it possible for us to understand each other and develop friendship and closeness.”

In conclusion, we can all contribute to what is happening with our Afghan brothers and sisters, and we can do it thanks to solidarity. The solidarity that Ecuador has shown should be an example to follow. These are the models that we as human beings should copy. Solidarity and respect for dignity are what make us all one big global family. And that at the end of the day is what we are in the World Youth Alliance, one big family with many differences, but with great enthusiasm in the defense of human dignity through education, advocacy, and culture.

Ecuador, Un Ejemplo A Seguir
