Mental Health, our Greatest Treasure

As human beings we have to be aware of the fact that we are more than just physical matter. We are one beautiful and immense complexity with diverse dimensions: moral, spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual. Therefore, in order to honor all of these spheres of life, it is advisable to keep a balance among them.

One important aspect of this balance that day by day is taking special consideration is, without any doubt, mental health. Especially nowadays that due to the pandemic, mental health has managed to get the space that it deserved many years before.

According to the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (2021), “the main psychological impact to date related to the pandemic is elevated rates of stress or anxiety.” The fact of being isolated at home, far from life as we lived and knew, without doing the normal activities that we liked to do, is not an easy experience. It has been a journey of ups and downs for everyone. In fact, suffering a mental health issue is not easy. For many people, it takes a lot of courage to speak out and be able to ask for help.

I am a Psychology student and as I am doing my internship here in WYA, I also have the amazing opportunity to be doing an Internship related to my major, where I get to work with people of all ages, from children to elderly.

During this time, I have discovered how important it is to extend a hand to others, to treat each other with empathy and kindness, to smile, to be totally authentic and willing to open your heart and show yourself as you truly are. It is right at this moment when I realized that more than ever, we must keep defending every single person’s human dignity. Why then? Someone may ask. So that more voices are heard and helped.

I know, it is hard to understand why others are suffering and how someone else feels even when we ourselves do not know exactly how we feel. However, we get to decide the attitude we put into our daily life (as Viktor Frankl once said) and even into other people’s lives. When we decide to stand for other’s dignity, we are giving the chance to every person to be and feel honored and respected without feeling out of the box, but part of a community in which they can trust one another for the simple fact of being a human being. Mental health is a treasure that everyone should take care of.  Yes, it takes a lot of courage. But, what is life without taking risks?

Remember dear reader, you can make a difference. You can be the person that can help other that wants to be seen. You. Only You.

Salud Mental, Nuestro Grande Tesoro
