Different technological tools have been of great help to young university students. Social media, video games, and the internet have provided various ways to facilitate teaching and learning in higher education around the world. In this way, all kinds of free information have been given to young people, and tools to share in order for them to increase their taste for knowledge. However, these technological aids have also provided vast possibilities for the abuse of the internet for leisure, which has led to the misuse of time in university students and poor academic performance.

I will explain two factors related to the use of technologies that influence the poor academic performance of students and that are the basis for controlling time:

1. Technology addiction:

The lifestyle focused on leisure includes many young people from the universities, not only brings with it low academic performance but also personality problems. (García del Castillo, 2007) refers to the fact that an impact is also generated in their daily life or lifestyles: reduction or deterioration in professional, family and social matters, and healthy habits (health care, physical activity, cycle alterations sleep-wake), among others.

Taking into account that these problems are as serious as, for example, the interaction of the young person with their own classmates, the high frequency of use of these leisure games tends to create a dependency on it. This generates that the young person is increasingly vulnerable to some personal deficits, such as low self-esteem, shyness, social phobia, among others (Echeburúa, 1997). In this way, it is validated that the importance of using the internet is primarily related to video games and social networks.

2. Procrastination:

According to the study by (Carranza & Ramírez, s. F.) procrastination is defined as “the voluntary or involuntary postponement of responsibilities that must be delivered at a set time”. Procrastination is not simply stopping an activity or task, but postponing it, because it causes discomfort, or the student does not feel in the capacity or in the attitude to do it properly, either because he does not know about the subject or because of its interest.

Mainly what leads the student to procrastinate and give a sense of disinterest in their work is that their attention is focused on their social networks, their video games, other things that do not help to create a learning space that helps make the decision to get the job done. Procrastination hides behind the excuse of not knowing about it, and instead more attention is paid to leisure, they lose focus on their activities and avoid them. For these reasons, the procrastinator is not able to concentrate his attention on important activities, his thinking is short-term without being able to plan more for the future, and with his behavior he seeks to avoid or minimize this feeling, which, at the same time, presents a certain biological vulnerability towards a state of tension with some impulsivity (Angarita, L. 2012).

New technologies are created, among others, to present information. Young people in particular are more attracted to their use, and modern technologies recognize this. Therefore, your main target audience is young people. The possibilities open up to a world of infinite information and forms of entertainment, the problem is that young people do not have time to do academic work and spend a lot of time for entertainment.

Based on the use of a young university student’s time, I consider that work time should be used for academic work and professional duties. Free time to be used for entertainment in different aspects, video games, social networks and others. However, WYA’s Certified Training Program (CTP) gives this great advice for young people who want to make the most out of their leisure time. While games can provide entertainment, Joseph Pieper’s reading defines true leisure as  an activity meaningful in itself. It is something that helps us contemplate life and human existence in activities like religious meditation, philosophical reflection, celebration or immersing ourselves in art.

The serious problems of abusive use of the Internet are marking a great mark on the life of university students since, as explained (Astonitas Villafuerte, Lya Mainé, 2005) this medium includes many changes, most of them related to communications and way of relating. All the improvements implemented have also led to the appearance of the disorder known today as internet addiction.

Internet addiction in the university population is an important issue given that currently access to these services has increased and is promoted, with university students being the main affected by this since their academic environment requires them to be in constant contact with the devices and to be totally immersed in the digital world, moving away from a real environment.

Most students should know the importance of good time planning and how it helps in all aspects and aspects of life. An attempt should be made to develop a planner or organizer to provide mediocrity and procrastination, defining the role of electronic devices in this student environment in order to get the most out of them and have a main focus: the results in education.
