Back in Cebu for the Visayas-Mindanao Joint Regional Conference

Last October 20, 2006 (Friday), WYA AP paid Cebu City, the Queen City of the South, another visit. This time it was to address the delegates of the 1st Association of Law Students of the Philippines Visayas-Mindanao Joint Regional Conference. The infosession was held at the very new Theodore Buttenbruch Hall of the University of San Carlos – Main Campus. Appearing before law students from San Sebastian College-Recoletos (Manila), University of Iloilo (Iloilo City), Silliman University (Dumaguete City), Holy Name University (Tagbilaran City), Southwestern University (Cebu City), and University of San Carlos (Cebu City), we certainly looked forward to a serious, if not lawyerly participation from them.

Asia Pacific Director Erika Tatad addressed aspiring lawyers from these different law schools wanting and very eager to know more about WYA, what we have done and what we continue do. The infosession started with an enticing video presentation on the organization, followed by the unique history of WYA. The infosession was made lively by the active participation of the students in the Man vs Dog exercise. It was a learning activity as much as it was a way of introducing WYA. The talk ended with some of the students coming up and personally commending WYA, and more importantly agreeing to the WYA Charter and signing up as members.

The vision of WYA was certainly echoed by these law students, as they recognize the role of the youth in society and are cognizant of the rights afforded to them by the law. We are truly hopeful that as these participants go home to their provinces, they will bring with them WYA, and will help promote the dignity of the person.

Appreciation is due to those people who labored to bring WYAAP back to Cebu City. Atty. Alex Monteclar, Dean of the University of San Carlos College of Law, and Atty. Joan Largo, Assistant to the Dean for opening their doors once again to us. We extend our many thanks to the officers of ALSP starting with the National Board Auditor Rey Beluso III, Visayas Regional Board Chairperson Barnsby D. Cagang, and Secretary-General Lyn  N. Aguelo. To the working committee of the 1st ALSP Visayas-Mindanao Joint Regional Conference composed of tireless students from the University of San Carlos and Southwestern University who gave us an occasion to talk about WYA. And finally, thank you to Mark Leo Chang, Karen Dy, Pamela Palacao, Ardelle Merton, Katherine Orayan, and Estrella Menchavez for being such gracious hosts.

Charisse Piramide, WYA member in Cebu City, is in her first year of law school at the University of San Carlos. Chappy loves to read and loves to play sports. Thanks for the wonderful time in Cebu, Chappy!!!!
