Building Friendships Beyond Borders – WYAAP Team visits Bangkok

Last August 14 to 18, World Youth Alliance Asia Pacific (WYAAP) conducted various school visits in Bangkok, Thailand. Together with the Regional Director Ms. Christine Violago were her full time interns Ana, Jermayne and Ron from De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), Consular and Diplomatic Affairs (CDA) students.

The first stop for the Regional Director tour was Mahidol University. The WYAAP team was warmly welcomed by Asst. Prof. Bundhit Jirajariyavej – Vice President for Student and University Affairs, Asst. Prof. Surakit Nathisuwan – Vice President for International Relations, Mrs. Kanjanaput Wongwantanee -Director for Division of Students Affairs, Mahidol Young Ambassadors as well as other staff members of the International Student Affairs Office. The meeting started with a video presentation of the school followed by Ms. Violago’s introduction of World Youth Alliance. The full time interns/volunteers also shared the work they do for the region, and answered a series of questions after. The WYAAP team was pleased to get the chance to have a dialogue exchange with the students of the university and even get a tour around the campus grounds. It was definitely great to see cultural similarities and differences as well as be exposed to best practices on student learning and development.

Following Mahidol University was a visit to Chulalongkorn University. The team met with Mr. Guil Marc D. Mariano, the Junior Programme Officer of ASEAN University Network (AUN) and a CDA graduate from DLS-CSB. There was an interactive discussion about the projects of AUN and WYAAP. The team was inspired by the commitment of AUN to build good partnerships and to push for educational opportunities to more youth within Asia.

The next days in Bangkok were fruitful as well. The Regional Director was also able to meet up with Mr. Nuttapol Vittivoradit, the Vice President of External Affairs of Chulalongkorn University. He showed his passion for student involvement and youth empowerment. This was followed by a meeting with Mr. Tanawat Suwannapan, Student Council Chariman and his assistant from Burapha University. It was indeed a pleasure for the team to meet them as they shared new ideas as well as provided insights to the culture and background of young people in Thailand.

Even before going back to Manila a last minute meeting was conducted at the Suvarnhabumi Airport with Mr. Visit Dejkumtorn, the President of Friendship for Peace (FFP), a non government organization based in Thailand.

The Regional Director Tour of the WYAAP was definitely a success! Aside from getting more members, the team received several positive feedbacks and offers future partnerships. This is a perfect example of how we are able to build bridges and great friendships beyond borders.
