World Youth Alliance Europe – Dignity Alert:
Contact Members of the European Parliament
on World AIDS Day
BEFORE THURSDAY at NOON!
This Thursday, which will be the World AIDS Day, the European Parliament plans to vote on a resolution emphasizing the MEPs’ will to stop the epidemics and the ravages caused by the disease, as well as the need to strengthen efforts in this regard.
We ask you to show support to the position we voice at the European Parliament, as:
· 3 paragraphs in the joint motion for a resolution supported by most of political groups (namely the recital AA, and paragraphs 14 and 22) are problematic as they establish an inaccurate link between HIV/AIDS and "Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights", which usually includes “safe and legal abortion”.
· Paragraph 10, "calls on the Commission to develop joint EU action and approaches to promoting a rights based approach to addressing HIV/AIDS policies", which goes against the internationally agreed principle of universality of human rights.
As European members and friends of the World Youth Alliance, you know that the WYA advocates for a person-centered approach to HIV/AIDS, which is based on a holistic perception of the person’s needs in HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Our full statement is available through this link. We stay at your disposal should you have any question.
Therefore, in parallel with efforts currently conducted at the European Parliament, we ask you to write to your MEP and urge them to vote AGAINST recital AA and paragraphs 10, 14, and 22, as it reads in the document available here.
The vote is scheduled this Thursday, December 1st, during the NOON voting session: it is important that your email reaches them as soon as possible before then.
From all the WYA Staff – Thank you for your solidarity in promoting human dignity: your help can make a real difference!
