27 summer campers from the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia participated in the 2014 WYA Asia Pacific Summer Camp held on May 11 to 15, 2014 at Palm Beach Resort, Batangas Province, Philippines. 24 summer campers passed the accreditation interview on May 15 and 3 summer camp participants will undergo their accreditation interview in June.
“The summer camp has changed my perspective in life because I have become more acquainted and have understood the concept of our intrinsic and inviolable human dignity. I enjoyed the activities and getting the chance to interact with different people. I also liked that I was given the opportunity to meditate and have fun while learning in the process,” camper and World Youth Alliance Assumption Iloilo Teen Club member Hannah Tupas shared.
The camp attendees included 13 high school students from Assumption Iloilo High School, Ateneo de Iloilo, La Salle Green Hills, PAREF Westbridge Iloilo and St. Joseph School Iloilo; 13 college students from Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, De La Salle University-Manila, Don Bosco College-Canluban, Putera Batam University Indonesia, Institute of Foreign Languages Cambodia, St. Paul University-Surigao, University of Santo Tomas; and one instructor from Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
Some of the summer camp participants will be starting WYA chapters in their schools and cities this year. “After this camp, I would put up a chapter in our school together with my colleagues who also attended this camp. After graduating from high school, I will volunteer to do some charity work with WYA. I want to invite my classmates and friends to join WYA so they will also understand WYA’s work and what we are defending,” camper Katrina Flores shared.
“I am really inspired by the mission of WYA. I am planning to promote human dignity by focusing on [education]. I really want to pursue my dream to build more libraries around the Philippines,” camper Kiana Porras, also shared.
