Winning Films of the Manhattan International Film Festival Screened at United Nations

The five winners of the 2014 Manhattan International Film Festival (MIFF) had the opportunity to screen their original work at the United Nations on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30 pm. The Permanent Mission of El Salvador and the World Youth Alliance co-hosted the screening event, which included a performance by the World Youth Alliance Chamber Orchestra.

The MIFF winners who were screened included Croatian director Maja Subaric for her documentary “What We Do”; Filipino director Xandrino Mangunay for his drama “Laum”; and Spanish director Josep Antoni Ribas Rossello for his animation “The Unforgettable Pianist”. Honorable mentions were awarded to Spanish director Daniel Alava and Romanian director Ion Sova for their animated films “Dummies” and “Tenebris” respectively.

“We were very pleased to receive 130 submissions for this year’s competition – a 50% increase from last year. The quality of work was very high and we are delighted to be sharing these top films at the United Nations,” said Alexis Kende, Director of Cultural Programs for the World Youth Alliance. “These prize-winning films capture various facets of the spirit that motivates our work at World Youth Alliance. We look forward to continuing to grow this festival in the years to come!”

At the conclusion of the event, Ms. Kende invited young directors to consider applying to next year’s festival, which will take place March 20-22, 2015. Additional details are available on the MIFF webpage, including application deadline (December 8, 2014) and submission guidelines.

Another upcoming cultural event of the World Youth Alliance is the International Arts Forum (IAF). This annual conference brings together artists from a variety of disciplines and cultural backgrounds to share their work and discuss the importance of art in today’s world. The next IAF will be hosted in New York November 7-9, 2014. Artists of various disciplines are invited to apply. More information can be found on the IAF webpage.
