Last 21 November 2014, WYA Asia Pacific showcased eight short films that were finalists and winners of this year’s Manhattan International Film Festival (MIFF) in New York. The event was held at the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Design and Arts (SDA) Cinema.
After a short introduction by Regional Director Lord Leomer Pomperada, the films were screened, including winning pieces such as Laum (Xandrino Mangunay), Tenebris (Ion Sova, Romania), Dummies (Daniel Alava, Spain), The Unforgettable Pianist (Josep Antoni Ribas Rossello, Spain), What We Do (Maja Šubarić, Croatia), as well as Para Kay Ama (Relyn Tan), Princess Urduja (Tiffanie Ang) and The Bicycle Crew (Anya Zulueta) which were finalists from the Asia Pacific region.
Directors Xandrino Mangunay, Tiffanie Ang, Relyn Tan and Anya Zulueta were also present in the screening and participated in a brief Directors’ Panel afterwards. During the open forum, the directors talked about the inspiration behind their films, their creative process, and why joining the MIFF was a worthwhile experience. They also called for greater support for locally-made films, especially ones created by the youth.
Regional Director for Operations Zarina San Jose formally closed the event by inviting the audience to upcoming WYA projects, and encouraging the attendees to submit their films to the MIFF 2015.
This event was made possible through a partnership with DLS-CSB Film Department, DLS-CSB SDA, and Benildean Filmworks.
