October 19, 2021 Manila, Philippines – World Youth Alliance Asia Pacific (WYAAP) is proud to announce the theme of this year’s Emerging Leaders Conference “Compassion In Action”, to be held virtually on November 26 to 27, 2021.
Following the global International Solidarity Forum focus on Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, WYAAP chose to pursue the theme compassion, for others and for the self.
The Emerging Leaders Conference is an annual event held by the regional offices which serves as an opportunity for regional members to come together to discuss a salient issue in society (Read all about the 9th Emerging Leaders Conference here). This year’s ELC takes members through discussions surrounding Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia – an emerging trend and procedure that violates the dignity of people at the end of life (Read WYA White paper here). These procedures have been seen as a “compassionate act” by those advocating for it, distracting from real interventions for people in pain and suffering such as increased palliative care, improved patient-doctor relationships and psychosocial help.
The 10th ELC will be held on November 26 to 27 with Day 1 consisting of talks from Sofia Piecuch, World Youth Alliance Director of Advocacy, Renee Joubert of the Euthanasia Free New Zealand Organization, Dr. Kyungsuk Choi, of Ewha University Law School in South Korea and Calum Miller, a bioethicist and medical doctor based in the UK. Day 2 consists of discussions of compassion for others that features Frances Mae Mata of the Philippine Red Cross.
The event is free admission. Please sign up at bit.ly/2021APELC today.
