2020 Manhattan International Film Festival Finalists Announced

WYA is happy to announce the top ten films that have qualified as finalists for the 8th Manhattan International Film Festival (MIFF). This year’s line up boasts of young filmmakers from Greece, the United States, Lebanon, and the United Kingdom. WYA Statement on He Jiankui and ‘gene-edited babies’

News broke in 2019 that researchers led by He JianKui, a Chinese scientist, claimed that two babies had been born following gene editing. He claimed that the edits, made on children with at least one HIV-positive parent, would make them resistant to HIV. WYA believes that each human being possesses intrinsic dignity from conception until natural death, and that it is the utmost responsibility of the family, with society, to ensure that human beings are not reduced to commodities, including by the research community, and even when seemingly well-intentioned.

Portugese Assembly Advances Euthanasia Bill

WYA is deeply concerned by a vote that took place Thursday, 20 February, in which the Portugal’s legislature, the Republican Assembly, advanced legislation to legalise euthanasia and assisted suicide. The next step is for a parliamentary committee to consolidate the five similar proposals into one bill before it can be considered to be adopted as a whole.
