WYA Europe Prepares for the International Year of the Family

 

On the 15th of May 2013 at the European Parliament, World Youth Alliance Europe co-organized the conference entitled “Balancing family life and work”, a preparatory event for the 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2014.

The conference was focused on the work-life balance, one of the main three themes of the 20th Anniversary, confronting family poverty, social exclusion, and advancing intergenerational solidarity. The focus was set on the work and family reconciliation as a complex process which involves a multi-dimensional approach involving main stakeholders like: families, companies and governments, emphasizing both cultural and political problems alongside with the solutions to these problems, focusing on reconciliation strategies both at political and private sector level.

Participants were honored by the presence of H.E. Laszlo Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion who highlighted the importance and necessity to balance family life and work in policy at EU level and that the European Commission is committed to support family based policies in order to achieve smart and inclusive growth emphasizing the existing correlation between family policy and demographic change in Europe.

Among the speakers also participated, Mrs. Anna Zaborska MEP, Mr. David Fieldsend, Officer Manager, Care for Europe, Mr. Ignacio Socias, the International Federation for Family Development, Mr. Steffen Zoller, founder of the “Betreut.de” an  European leading company aimed at providing online support for families and Mr. Philippe de Woot, Emeritus Professor at The Universite Catholique de Louvain.

On the Behalf of the World Youth Alliance Europe at the event were present, Agnes King, the Operations Director, Juan Ingnacio Fernandez Torres, the Advocacy Director and Interns Jon Sainz, Gonzalo Ucha and Victor Ciumac.  

The co-organizers were the esteemed organizations: The International Federation for Family Development, Make Mothers Matter International, Federation of Catholic Association of Families in Europe, European Federation of Parents and Carers at Home, New Women for Europe, Forum Européen des Femmes, European Large Families Confederation, European Local Inclusion and social action network (ELISAN), Care for Europe and Veneto Region.

The Event was hosted by the Working Group on Family, the rights of the Child and solidarity between generations in the European Parliament.
