Washington, D.C. — Last January 25th, a team of World Youth Alliance (WYA) members was in Washington, D.C. for the March for Life weekend. This annual march, held on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade landmark case that legalized abortion in the USA, is the biggest gathering of individuals and organizations calling for an end to abortion and a respect for the right to life of the unborn.
In recognition of the importance of promoting and defending the dignity of the human person from conception, WYA sent a delegation to march alongside a crowd of over six hundred thousand that gathered at the National Mall, walked down the Constitution Avenue and convened in front of the US Capitol. Despite the overwhelming numbers, media coverage for the March for Life remains disproportionately low, as noted by our intern Anthony Readings in his blogpost “Media Coverage of the March for Life: Accurate Representation or Gross Falsification” on the WYA blog.
Aside from joining the march itself, WYA also had a presence in some key conferences held on the occasion of the March for Life. Intern Lenore Healy shares some personal reflections on attending the National Review Institute Summit in her blogpost, “It’s not just her concern, but his too.”
A second team manned a booth at the Cardinal O’Connor Conference, one of the biggest student-run gatherings, held at Georgetown University. The National Catholic Register article by Connie Marshner includes WYA as one of the many organizations at the conference exhibit that “provided a glimpse into the microcosm of the culture-of-life counter revolution currently under way.”
By the end of the trip to Washington D.C, over 800 young people who shared WYA’s dedication to the defense of human dignity had signed the WYA Charter. This is the second time that WYA has sent a delegation to the March for Life and we are committed to joining this event annually in the coming years.
