February 12, 2020, New York – World Youth Alliance (WYA) North America hosted the sixth Model United Nations at its Cathedral High School in New York City this past month. Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity where students are assigned a nation and are tasked with role playing as that nation in a simulated UN commission. There are thousands clubs and organizations dedicated to MUN at middle schools, high schools, and colleges throughout the world.
Students in a WYA club at Cathedral High were each assigned a country and given two weeks to research on it. After some time getting to understand their country’s views and their standing on the world stage, students engaged in a structured debate on the topic of Women and Girls in Rural Areas. The topic was an amended version of the theme for the upcoming 62nd Commission on the Status of Women. While employing the skills of debate and critical thinking, the students also learned about UN procedure and gained a sense of the international landscape on contentious issues such as abortion, population, contraception, and sexual education.
WYA is very grateful to Cathedral High School and we look forward to returning next year.
