The event started with remarks from WYA North America Regional Director Siobhan Heekin-Canedy, who was followed by Sofia Piecuch, WYA Director of Advocacy. Sofia spoke about the flaws in the prevailing concept of “unmet need for contraception” and outlined the history of the intersection between development aid and reproductive health and how “politics and power” have led global policymakers to ignore the real needs of women. Olivia Shingledecker, the WYA Benedictine College Chapter leader and a certified FEMM instructor, shared her experience teaching young women about their hormonal and reproductive health and spoke about the need to find new ways to reach college women with this important information. Danielle Koestner, D.O., served as the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Koestner’s clinical practice is primarily through the FEMM telemed health network, and she is a member of the FEMM Medical Education team. Her presentation drew on her deep knowledge of reproductive health and her experience working with women and other medical providers through FEMM. Her presentation was followed by a lively Q and A with all the participants.

All told, the 2021 ELC was a great success with the participants, and we hope to be back for an in-person ELC next year!
