To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, WYA has released the Declaration on Family and Economic Development. Trained members from around the world negotiated the declaration at this year’s International Solidarity Forum. The declaration asserts the central role of the family in the economic development of all societies and recognizes that "children from strong healthy families have better educational outcomes and economic and career opportunities." Further, our members agree that "the strong examples set by parents, grandparents, and extended family members foster the work ethic and moral character of individuals entering into the work force, which positively impacts the quality of the work force and reduces youth unemployment." The declaration calls on the public and private sectors at all levels to take into account the role of the family as the backbone of development in their efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the future Sustainable Development Goals.
