October 21, 2020 – World Youth Alliance laments the approval of the use of the death penalty for convicted rapists in Bangladesh. Rape is a serious crime which has long term effects on its victims; its perpetrators treat their victims like objects to be used, rather than persons worthy of respect and love. As an act, it fundamentally disrespects the dignity of those it harms. WYA supports efforts to ensure that rapists are held accountable and to support victims of rape.

Rape culture and its effects are undeniable issues which require commitment at all levels to address. World Youth Alliance believes that holistic, person-centered solutions need to be employed by governments when addressing issues such as rape. These solutions must respect the inherent dignity, value and potential of people to change, and ensure that the physical, mental, social, and judicial needs of victims are met.

However, the imposition of capital punishment is not the answer. WYA continues to affirm the dignity of every human person, from conception to natural death. That dignity cannot be granted or removed, even when a person has committed heinous actions. We are hopeful that Bangladesh, and all those countries which permit capital punishment under any circumstance, may one day again safeguard the right to life.
