The World Youth Alliance Asia Pacific (WYAAP) Regional Director Christine Violago, together with current and past interns headed to Ibaan, Batangas last May 11, 2013. Christine was invited to speak about Volunteerism at the Leadership and Training Seminar of De La Salle Lipa. The audience consisted of about 260 student leaders from different organizations within the university.
Upon arrival, the WYA staff and interns were pleased to witness the lively atmosphere emanating from the students. A huge banner bearing the sign “I AM A LA SALLIAN STUDENT LEADER who: Teaches Minds. Touches Hearts. Transform Lives.” was an instant motivation for the WYA group to gear up for the talk and spread the organization’s mission to protect and promote human dignity.
Christine tackled topics concerning genuine and effective leadership and the role of youth in volunteerism. In addition, she was able to propagate WYA’s mission and talk about Health and Sustainable Development, which is the recent theme of the International Solidarity Forum (ISF).
Towards the end of the talk, past intern and summer camp participant Rejean Darroca shared her WYA experiences as an active member. On the other hand, current intern Theresa Flores was pleasantly surprised at the number of students who came up to her to communicate their interest to be a WYA intern.
Although the travel time from Manila to Batangas was quite long, the WYA group never felt that they wasted any second of it. They collectively believe they were able to impart a handful of knowledge and values to some of De La Salle Lipa’s youth.
