Beirut, Lebanon—The World Youth Alliance Middle East (WYAME) interns hosted a fundraising and a cultural event at the Metropolis Cinema in Sophil Center, Ashrafieh. Interns, Hala Nasreddine, Hovsep Markarian, Otto Kaplas and Jennifer Miftaroska, held an exclusive screening of the movie “3000 Nights” by the Palestinian-American director Mai Masri, followed by a Q&A session with Masri.
The interns chose “3000 Nights” for its theme that touches the issue of human rights and human dignity especially that of prisoners and Palestinians in the occupied territories. In the movie, the main character, Layal is a newlywed Palestinian school teacher who is falsely accused and incarcerated in an Israeli prison, where she gives birth to a baby boy. Through her struggle to protect her child and her relationship with the prisoners around her, she finds the strength to stand up for herself and fight for her son.
After the movie, the interns made a brief presentation about WYA and highlighted the importance of arts and culture in spreading awareness about human rights and human dignity. Later, they introduced Masri for the Q & A session, which was met with great enthusiasm by the audience.
