WYANA Brings A Model UN Debate to Cathedral High School

United Nations

World Youth Alliance (WYA) North America hosted the first ever Model United Nations at its Cathedral High School Chapter in New York City this past March and April 2015. Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is a strenuous academic simulation and competition that is popular throughout the world at middle school, high school, and college level.

The students act as delegates of their chosen country and debate a pre-assigned issue in an effort to win favor with other delegates while defending their state’s interests. For this first debate, the country delegates simulated a meeting within the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and debated on the topic “Sustainable Diets: GMOs.” While learning about international issues and relationships, students also learn about UN procedure and practice researching, public speaking, and debating. We hope that this will provide the students with an interactive glimpse in into the workings of the UN and that this will be just the first of many debates.
