World Youth Alliance (WYA) North America hosted the fifth Model United Nations at its Cathedral High School Club in New York City this past February 2019. Model United Nations (MUN) is an activity where students take on the role of various nations and simulate a UN commission. There are thousands clubs and organizations dedicated to MUN at middle schools, high schools, and colleges throughout the world.
Students in a WYA club at Cathedral High were each assigned a country and given two weeks to research on it. After some time getting to understand their country’s views and their standing on the world stage, students engaged in a structured debate on Gender Equality and Social Services. The topic was an amended version of the theme for the upcoming 63rd Commission on the Status of Women. While employing the skills of debate and critical thinking, the students also learned about UN procedure and gained a sense of the international landscape on contentious issues such as abortion, population, contraception, and sexual education. WYA is very grateful to Cathedral High School and we look forward to returning next year.
